About the Software

Choosing WebSphere Portal is an investment in a proven, extensible, standards-based platform from IBM - a platform designed to help keep pace with the demanding online needs of your business.

IBM WebSphere Portal Server V6.1 is an enterprise portal solution with the complete portal services necessary to deliver a single point of personalized interaction with applications, content, business processes, and people. The unified user experience can help you improve overall productivity and customer satisfaction.

IBM Lotus Web Content Management, V6.1 enables companies to rapidly build next generation Web sites based on Web 2.0 technologies with new enhancements that can be used throughout the entire content lifecycle. Improvements in authoring, management, and delivery enable companies to interact with their customers, partners, and employees in new ways.

The WebSphere Portal Server & Lotus Web Content Management Standard Edition Developer AMI provides Amazon EC2 users with a fully configurable portal server and web content management solution.

Out of the box a number of key capabilities are provided:

  • Sample portal sites, including Intranet and internet
  • A New Site Wizard to instantiate new sites as virtual portals from templates
  • Theme Customizer to easily customize the look and feel of the portals/sites to meet your needs.
  • Integration with a local instance of IBM DB2 Enterprise Edition.

For production use the AMI is available on 64-bit 2.6.16 kernel level-based Linux OS and provides an end-to-end automation to get the AMI initially set up according to user’s requirements including:

  • Root and default user password setup
  • DB2 and WebSphere Portal hostname localization
  • Optional (recommended) Elastic Block Storage (EBS) setup for persistent data storage

When a WebSphere Portal/Lotus Web Content Management AMI instance is started for the very first time, a sequence of interactive configuration screens will help the user setup their environment in a few quick steps:

  1. Pre-installed OS/software license agreements screen
  2. Root and virtuser user password configuration screens
  3. WebSphere Portal and Application Server localization progress screens
  4. Amazon Web Services configuration screens
  5. EBS storage configuration screens

A description of each interactive step and additional information about how to re-package the WebSphere Portal/Lotus Web Content Management AMI with an ISV (Independent Software Vendor) application can be found in the accompanying documentation.

Instances created based on this AMI are configured for root-level access over secure shell (SSH) using the keypair you specify at instance creation.

WebSphere Portal and Lotus Web Content Management is installed under /opt/IBM/WebSphere. DB2 Enterprise Edition is installed under /opt/ibm/db2.

Once started, WebSphere Portal/Lotus Web Content Management can be accessed over the Web using the URL:

     http://[server]/wps/portal

Where [server] refers to the public DNS name of the new instance. Use the virtuser user ID to log into WebSphere Portal, using the password set during the initialization process. Note this also requires that the local HTTP Server be started. Refer to the Getting Started document under Resources and Documentation for details.
