Average Review:

A clean Debian Etch with the AMI-Tools and libc6-xen library pre-installed.

Submitted By: Paul Morris
AMI ID: ami-30f11459
AMI Manifest: debian-public/debian_etch_15Sep07.manifest.xml

The root password is 'etch', however, root password login is disabled (see '/etc/ssh/sshd_config'). You have to use ssh keys to launch and login to the instance in the same way as the Amazon public ami.

The AMI-Tools are installed so you can rebundle the running image as required.

At boot a script in '/etc/rc.local' grabs your public key (via http request) and appends it to '/root/.ssh/authorized_keys'. Be sure to consider the implications of this when rebundling the image.

A full HOWTO for building this AMI has been posted to the forum should you prefer to roll your own

This image has not been thoroughly tested and is provided for use without warranty of any kind on an 'as is' basis. That said I intend to use it myself and I hope you find it useful.

Methinks this is an Ubuntu AMI, not a Debian Etch.

It's not Ubuntu?, Jul 27, 2007 6:16 AM

Not sure about the comment above. Unless I made a serious mistake somewhere this was debootstrapped as Etch. Furthermore the apt sources list is set to Debian Etch and is fully upgraded as such. If the initial MOTD message says ubuntu I suspect that is a left over from my desktop machine (ubuntu) which was used to debootstrap the image. If you have any other reason to suggest that the image was accidentally polluted with Ubuntu get in touch and I'll investigate.

The hostname is set to 'ubuntu', but this is Debian Etch. Just run hostname and edit /etc/hostname to set the hostname to what you want. It works great. Thank you very much!

Seems to not work with Large Instance, Nov 11, 2007 5:11 PM

It says Large Instance does not agree with architecture specified in AMI manifest.

Worked like a charm. Including the EC2 tools was a beautiful touch, as I was planning on rebundling this with my updates. Great job.

problems using newer kernels, Jun 24, 2008 7:54 PM
Reviewer: Jay Borenstein
I can launch this base image using the 2.6.18 amazon kernel, but if I try to rebundle it with the older version AMItools on here, it doesn't retain the newer kernel info and subsequent images fire up instances that still use 2.6.16. So, I tried downloading and installing the latest AMI tools. I bundled up everything fine, but when I launch instances that I created, they are not accessible via ssh. I'm at a loss to explain why this is happening. If anyone has ideas, let me know. I will post any solutions I find.
