Not that my input is truly necessary, but I would like to say the we have been using S3 very successfully up until now.  While I agree it would be nice to have an ETA or some status page we could check, we definitely have not been "facing this problem for over some weeks now".  When its up, it works great.

That said, I am not happy about this failure since using S3 at work was my idea, and I will be taking some flack for it.

All,

We experienced networking issues today that have now been resolved. The root cause has been identified and we have taken measures to prevent such issues from occurring in the future. Thanks for your patience.

it would add to people's confidence if you gave more detail than "it's fixed and we aren't going to do it again (we hope)".  subtle issues that are hard to anticipate wouldn't bother me nearly as much as "d'oh! the janitor threw the breaker and we didn't notice until morning!".

Several times now we've been told that "there were some issues, but they are fixed now."

Brian - Would it be possible to get a better explanation?  We rely on your servers for mission critical applications and it's very disconcerting to have this keep happening.

Please consider taking a moment to explain what happened and what steps Amazon has taken to correct the issues.

Thanks!

It is true that S3 bears a great responsibility: When S3 stops (or does not work properly) my business stops too...

It was indeed a subtle, hard to anticipate problem; in addition to fixing the underlying cause, we have taken several steps to prevent its recurrence.

Thanks,
Navneet

Up until this incident, Amazon S3 has been very reliable. But, this occurence really underscored some of my initial reservations about fully committing to S3.

First of all, there needs to be a real SLA. There also needs to be the ability to contact someone for support, and clear accountability. What happens if S3 goes down for a longer period? Since we have no real contract with Amazon, there's really nothing we can do. Without accountability, there's no real loss to Amazon.

I've said it before that I see great potential with Amazon S3, and it has opened doors previously unavailable to smaller businesses like mine. But, I feel a genuine risk involved with the current arrangement.

The interesting thing about this service is that there are clients - and that's what we are: clients - who range from single-users backing up their home data to large web companies hosting terabytes of data.

Thanks to Amazon for launching this service. Hopefully, as it matures, so will the other client-related aspects of the service.
